In 1817 The Sovereign was revived, setting the standard that defined a currency. Two centuries on, the gold coin is still the most tightly specified coin in the world – a globally traded bullion coin and sought-after commemorative coin.

The Half-Sovereign was revived along with The Sovereign in 1817. It went unstruck for much of the 1900s, a casualty of the First World War, but it was reintroduced in 1980 and has been minted in almost every year since. This special edition Half-Sovereign features Benedetto Pistrucci’s original garter design, with full Old French inscription and border, for the first time ever.

The coin comes in a wooden case along with a booklet on the story of The Sovereign’s revival, its links with the Gold Standard and contains an excerpt from Dr Kevin Clancy’s book A History of The Sovereign: Chief Coin of the World, a Royal Mint Museum Publication.
