Folk pottery has been developed in the territory of present-day Latvia mainly in Latgale and Kurzeme. In Latgale, it has survived to the present day, forms one of the brightest signs of Latvian traditional culture and is included in the canon of Latvian culture.

The stylistic style of Latgale pottery includes both baroque gorgeous decoration techniques (especially for clay candlesticks, whistles, mugs and plates), as well as minimalism in the choice of color and decorations. Nowadays, simple and ascetic solutions dominate in Latgale pottery, but at the same time the tradition of using glaze and ornamentation is continued.

Latgale pottery has two development lines - practical (developed for thousands of years) and decorative (developed since the 1930s). The greatest attention in the 20th century. The so-called Silajāņi pottery was earned in 1841. The work of its bright representative Andrejs Paulāns (1896–1973) was characterized by three-branched and five-branched candlesticks. Both he and Polikarps Vilcāns (1894–1969) made candlesticks with 7, 9, even 15 and 25 branches. The commemorative coin dedicated to Latgale ceramics is decorated with a representation of a five-branched candlestick.
