Official commemorative 2 Euro coin, with the weight of 8,5 grams, a diameter of 25.75mm and a quality of Brilliant uncirculated (BU), issued by the Bank of Greece in 2013 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the accession of Crete in Greece. The inner part of the coin depicts Cretan rebels who raise the Greek flag, symbolic representation of the Cretan struggle for union with Greece.

Crete was incorporated into the Greek territory on December 1, 1913 during the reign of Constantine and Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. A few months before the Sultan Mehmet the fifth waved its rights and the sovereignty of Crete, as Greece was the winning power in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913).

The island of Crete was under Venetian administration for 465 years (1204- 1669). When on October 4, 1669 the Grand Vizier Kiopruli entered Chandax (now Heraklion) the Venetian era was ended and Crete was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. In 1898 it became independent of the sultan and founded the Cretan State (1898-1913) which was under the protection of the great powers and the suzerainty of the Sultan. The "Revolution in Theriso" (March 10, 1905) organized by Venizelos was primarily seeking union with Greece, which was reached eight years later in 1913.
