Lord Byron (George Gordon Byron, London 1788-Mesolonghi 1824) was an emblematic figure of European romanticism and one of the most important poets of the 19th century. From a very young age he harbored liberal and philhellenic feelings. He got to know Greece up close in 1809 during his Grand Tour in the Mediterranean. The fruit of this journey was the poetic work that made him famous, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, the second canto of which is dedicated to Greece. The outbreak of the Greek Revolution captured the romantic soul of Byron, who finally in 1823 decided to come to Greece to support the struggle more actively.
He settled in Messolonghi, where he spent large sums of his personal wealth to establish military and naval units. However, he did not have time to fight, because he fell ill and finally died on April 19, 1824. Byron's premature death was a tragic loss that shocked Hellenism, but at the same time strengthened the Philhellenic movement worldwide.
