   Official commemorative 2 Euro coin, with a weight of 8.5 grams, a diameter of 25.75mm and a quality of Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), issued by the National Mint of Portugal in 2014 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.

    The Carnation Revolution («Revolucao dos Cravos» in Portuguese) took place on March 25, 1974 by military officers in Portugal and put an end to the perennial dictatorial regime that ruled from 1926. Thus, restored democracy in Portugal after 48 years of dictatorship, where Portugal was ruled mainly by the fascist Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. The Carnation Revolution was a peaceful revolution. The Revolution was named by the government soldiers who had placed carnations in the barrels of their guns.

   The success of the "Carnation Revolution" resulted in the dissolution of the Portuguese empire with the independence of almost all its colonies. Moreover caused a new wave of democratization spread to Greece in 1974, Spain in 1975 and in Latin America.
